From Emotion to Feeling — The Language of the Heart

Emotions begin as sensations in the body — tightening, warmth, fluttering, heaviness. Feelings are how the mind interprets those sensations. For example, your heart races (emotion), and your mind labels it as excitement or anxiety depending on the context.
Mindfulness invites us to notice that moment of translation. If we can separate the raw sensation from the story we tell about it, we have a chance to see things more clearly. Often, our stories are shaped by past experiences, not just present events.
By becoming aware of this process, we can respond more wisely instead of reacting automatically. Understanding feelings allows us to recognize our patterns — the ones that serve us and the ones that don’t.
Practice: Next time you feel a strong emotion, pause. Notice the physical sensations first. Then ask, “What am I feeling right now?” This small gap between emotion and interpretation is where mindfulness lives.
The WellMinds Coaching team are experts at helping you identify your emotions and helping you identify where they originated so you can own and tame them to create your best future self.
